Tesla Megapack site in Queensland begins expansions beside coal plant

Construction has begun on expansions to a battery energy storage system (BESS) using Tesla Megapacks in Queensland, Australia, set to become one of the largest battery projects in the state.

The Stanwell battery in Queensland has begun construction and is set to use 324 of Tesla’s 2XL Megapack units to form a 300MW/1,200MWh BESS project, as detailed in a report on Monday from Renew Economy. The project gained a $448.2 million investment from the Queensland government, and it’s being built beside a coal plant in the village of Stanwell that’s expected to close soon.

Huge Tesla Megapack project breaks ground in Queensland

“This battery project is the largest of its kind in Queensland and will create around 80 jobs in construction,” said Queensland Minister for Energy and Clean Economy Jobs, Mick de Brenni.

“What batteries deliver to the Queensland SuperGrid is reliable power. When batteries like this are publicly owned it means Queenslanders themselves benefit, not overseas shareholders. We want to ensure we maintain downward pressure on power bills for all Queenslanders by building more renewable energy and storage.”

Expansions to the Stanwell battery were announced earlier this year (via Renew Economy), and they come in addition to other Stanwell company projects, including big batteries in Tarong and Callide.

The project also comes as part of a planned 5GW investment from Stanwell to help convert the area’s fossil fuel generation efforts into a hub for renewables, with the company investing significant funding into energy storage, wind, and solar power generation projects. Coal generators in Stanwell, Tarong, and Callide are expected to begin their phase-put period in 2026 and 2027, only operating during peak demand hours.

This is also one of many massive battery projects being built in Australia, recently including a 415MW/1,660 MWh Megapack battery in Orana, New South Wales, a 600MW/1,600MWh project in Melbourne, and expansions to bring a battery in Collie up to 560 MW/2,240 MWh.
